EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
