In the final seconds, sheer ecstasy erupted for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández bundled in a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and provided the temporary Chelsea manager a truly golden moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Glaring Contrast in Experience

On the home bench was the era's defining coach, a man with an unparalleled CV for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, was a one-time trainer at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his senior managerial bow after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's key midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.

“Whirlwind” was the adjective McFarlane used to sum up his experience since being thrust into the role.

Spirited Chelsea Stifle City's Flow
